Paul Ceyssens, B.A., LL.B.
Paul Ceyssens practices law with his firm, Ceyssens & Bauchman, from Salt Spring Island, B.C. His nationally focused practice provides advisory legal services in jurisdictions across Canada and is restricted to police-related legal issues (on behalf of police management, police officers, police oversight bodies, police associations and governments), employment law and human rights law. Much of the firm's work involves providing formal legal opinions regarding conduct-related issues in the police workplace, including matters where accommodation and other human rights issues arise. Paul is a member of the Bars of Ontario and British Columbia.
Paul's text Legal Aspects of Policing was published in 1994, and addresses constitutional and legal status of the police, police duties, civil liability, internal discipline procedure, discipline offences, the public complaints process and related issues. He writes updates to the text twice each year. In 1998, he coauthored the Ontario Police Services Act, Fully Annotated, and coauthored the second edition of this text, published in March, 2002- 2003. Paul also chairs the editorial board for the Police Law Reports, a series of law reports containing decisions of courts and other tribunals on police civil liability, internal discipline, public complaints, human rights and other aspects of the legal regulation of the police.
Until recently, Paul taught "Legal Issues in Policing," a distance-education course for police officers offered by Henson College, Dalhousie University. Paul has lectured on issues relating to the legal regulation of police, in B.C., Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
Paul is recognized as a Canadian authority on the legal regulation of police. In addition to his practice and writing, he lectures across Canada to police chiefs, police associations, police departments and government agencies. His textbook, Legal Aspects of Policing, has been cited with approval by the judiciary and adjudicators, including most recently, the Supreme Court of Canada.

Laurel Bauchman, B.A., B.Ed., LL.B.
Laurel Bauchman practices law with the law firm of Ceyssens and Bauchman on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia
Laurel is a graduate of Dalhousie University's Faculty of Law. She has worked as staff solicitor with Nova Scotia Legal Aid, as Investigator with the Ontario Office of the Ombudsman, and as Manager of Legal Services for the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria BC.
Laurel authored the distance-learning course Policing and the Law of Human Rights for Hensen College at Dalhousie University. She taught the course for several years.
In addition to her law practice, Laurel is president of Earlscourt Legal Press and edits the Police Law Reports.
